ERCOT News Release
ERCOT Expects Tight Grid Conditions, Requests Conservation Today from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. CT
(Austin, TX) – Due to continued high temperatures, high demand, low wind, and declining solar power generation this afternoon, operating reserves are expected to be low into the afternoon and evening hours. As a result, ERCOT is asking Texans to conserve electricity use, if safe to do so, today, September 7, from 5 p.m. – 9 p.m. CT. ERCOT is expecting similar conditions tomorrow and will keep the public informed through our communications channels.
Today’s conservation appeal does not indicate ERCOT is experiencing emergency conditions at this time. Current forecasts are showing a potential for low reserves today because of continued high temperatures, high demand, low wind, and declining solar power generation into the afternoon and evening hours. ERCOT will continue to closely monitor conditions throughout the day and will keep the public informed through our communications channels.
Conservation is a widely used industry tool that can help lower demand for a specific period of peak demand time, which is typically late afternoon into the evening hours.
ERCOT is requesting all government agencies (including city and county offices) to implement all programs to reduce energy use at their facilities.
ERCOT continues to use additional tools to manage the grid reliably, including using reserve power, calling upon reductions by large electric customers that have volunteered to lower their energy use, and bringing more generation online sooner. ERCOT is also working with out-of-state Independent System Operators (ISOs) and Market Participants to obtain additional power generation capacity. ERCOT has obtained Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) enforcement discretion, which allows a generator to extend its service/run-time/operations to help meet demand, if needed, and maintain grid reliability.
ERCOT is taking additional precautionary measures by requesting from the Department of Energy (DOE) an order that would allow generating units within the ERCOT interconnection to operate up to their maximum generation output levels, if needed, and promptly respond if conditions warranted.
If you are experiencing an outage at this time, it is local in nature and not related to overall grid reliability. Please check with your local electric provider for more information. Energy-saving tips can be found on the TXANS webpage at ercot.com/txans.
Why the Request to Reduce Usage?
• Heat. Continued statewide high temperatures.
• Demand. Texas is seeing high demand due to the heat.
• Solar. Solar generation starts to decline earlier in the afternoon hours towards the end of summer before completely going offline at sunset.
• Wind. Wind generation is forecasted to be low this afternoon and into the evening hours during peak demand time.

ERCOT News Release
ERCOT Has Exited Emergency Operations, Returned to Normal Grid Conditions. No Grid-related Outages Were Necessary.
(Austin, TX) – ERCOT has exited emergency operations and returned to normal conditions.
ERCOT entered Emergency Operations this evening to maintain stability of the grid. The EEA 2 was issued due to a combination of dropping operating reserves and frequency. Frequency of the entire ERCOT grid must be maintained between 60.1hz and 59.9hz at all times. By entering EEA 2, ERCOT could utilize additional reserve resources to protect the reliability of the grid. No power outages associated with the ERCOT power grid were necessary.
“Due to low reserves and a drop in frequency, ERCOT entered directly into EEA 2. To protect the stability of the electric system, ERCOT has access to additional reserve sources only available during emergency conditions,” said Pablo Vegas, ERCOT President and CEO. “High demand, lower wind generation, and the declining solar generation during sunset led to lower operating reserves on the grid and eventually contributed to lower frequency, which precipitated the emergency level 2 declaration.”
Texas set a new September peak demand record today of 82,705 MW driven by extreme heat across the state.
To protect the grid, ERCOT brought all available generation online, released remaining reserves, and used demand response to lower electric demand. ERCOT also worked with out-of-state Independent System Operators (ISOs) and Market Participants to obtain additional power generation capacity. Additionally, ERCOT obtained Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) enforcement discretion, which allows a generator to extend its service/run-time/operations to help meet demand, if needed, to help maintain grid reliability.
If you are experiencing an outage at this time, it is not because of the ERCOT power grid, but is local in nature. Please check with your local electric provider for more information.
You can find more information on EEAs here.
Factors leading to tight grid conditions include:
• Heat. Continued statewide high temperatures.
• Demand. High demand due to the heat.
• Solar. Solar generation declines earlier in the evening hours before completely going offline at sunset.
• Wind. Wind generation was low this evening during peak demand time.

ERCOT News Release
ERCOT Has Initiated Energy Emergency Alert Level 2 (EEA 2), Conservation is Critical
(Austin, TX) – ERCOT has moved into Emergency Operations issued an Energy Emergency Alert Level 2 (EEA 2) to maintain reliability of the grid. Earlier today, ERCOT issued a conservation appeal from 6 – 9 p.m. CT; however, operating reserves are continuing to decline. At this time, there are no power outages associated with the ERCOT power grid. ERCOT will continue to monitor conditions and deploy all available tools as part of our reliability-first approach to operations. ERCOT continues to request Texans conserve electricity use.
When reserves on the system get low, ERCOT begins emergency operations using three levels of Energy Emergency Alerts (EEAs). These levels provide access to additional power sources only available during emergency conditions to protect the reliability of the electric system. Entering Emergency Operations does not mean that ERCOT is expecting to call for controlled power outages, which would affect all customer classes, including residential, commercial, and industrial. Entering Emergency Operations means that ERCOT has access to more power reserves that help prevent power outages.
An EEA 2 is issued when ERCOT’s operating reserves have dropped below 1,750 MWs and are not expected to recover within 30 minutes. Controlled outages have not been requested at this time, however, could become necessary if demand isn’t lowered or additional supply cannot be added from generators.
At this time, ERCOT is bringing all available generation online, releasing any remaining reserves, using demand response to lower electric demand. ERCOT is also working with out-of-state Independent System Operators (ISOs) and Market Participants to obtain additional power generation capacity.
ERCOT has requested all government agencies (including city and county offices) to implement all programs to reduce energy use at their facilities.
You can find more information on EEAs here.

Critical Medical Needs Reminder
If you have medical needs, please contact your local electric utility and have a backup plan in case power reductions, or controlled outages, are needed later. Your local electric provider is responsible for managing the power reduction, or controlled outages, in your area.
