Garland, Texas, Dec. 13, 2016 – GP&L has made progress in converting the system’s 15,000 streetlights to energy-efficient light-emitting diode (LED) lights. 

As of Dec. 1 , GP&L has replaced nearly 2,700 high-pressure sodium luminaires with LEDs.

The LED conversion began in 2015 and is expected to be complete by 2022. In general, older streetlight circuits are being upgraded first. Replacement began in the southern part of Garland and is moving north.

Benefits of the new LED streetlights:

• Consume about one-third the energy of the old high-pressure sodium streetlights 

• Reduce costs and maintenance with a significantly increased lifespan 

• Produce a soft white light that shows true colors, rather than the amber light of the old streetlights

• Beautify the community by giving GP&L's streetlights a more modern and consistent look throughout Garland
